Tasting Note This has always been the insider's choice for top quality wine that will easily withstand two decades of cellaring. Besides its concentrated fruit, low acidity, high but sweet tannin and an overall impression of freshiness, Sociando Mallet always performs at classified-growth quality levels and yet at very affordable price.

WA (Apr 2005) - "Sociando Mallet is the poster child for what cru bourgeois estate can achieve. This is a wine that is consistently of classified-growth quality and also one of the longest lived wines made in the Medoc. An exceptional vintage for Sociando-Mallet, 2003 has produced a spectacularly concentrated, inky blue/purple-colored wine with an extraordinary nose of blackberries, raspberries, some white flowers, and a hint of lead pencil shavings. The wine is powerful, extremely full-bodied, quite tannic, and seriously endowed. This is stunning wine that is rich, riveting effort for the vintage and, as I wrote last year, probably a mordern-day version of a hypothetical blend of a 1970 and 1982. - RP"

About the Winery Situated on what was in 1633 the residence of a Basque nobleman named Sievre Sociando, the vineyard and chateau sits right on the Gironde, in the commune of St.-Seurin de Cadourne, just to the north of St. Estephe. Despite its reputation to produce classified-growth quality wine, it was neither ranked in the Bordeaux Wine Official classification of 1855, not existing at the time, nor is it listed among Medoc's Cru Bourgeois due to a decision of its owner not to enter it for such classification. In 1850, the estate was acquired by Madame Mallet and subsequently in 1969 by Jean Gautreau and since then the estate and the facilities have been upgraded to modern winery.

The property consists of 85 hectares (225 acres) planted with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% part Cabernet Franc and part Petit Verdot. This great estate, with subsoil nearly identical to that of Pauillac, fashions structured and massive wines that often require eight to ten years of aging. Average age of the vines is 30 years. Annual production 24,000 cases of Ch. Sociando Mallet plus its second wine Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet.
